Camaro 5 shopping.  Also, Brembo Brake Weights?

So after checking out the reveal of the gen6 Camaro, I’m seriously considering a gen5. Went to the local Chevy dealer to do a bit of window shopping and took some pictures.

Kinja'd!!!

This one has the RS and the 2SS package (which includes the HUD, which I want). But I am not sure if it is worth the upgrade to the ZL1. I really do sort of want the LSA supercharged engine and the rest of the ZL1 things. But dang, it’s a 20k+ price difference and I’ll have to order one or something as there are none within 250 miles of me. Plus, I could add a lot of go-fast parts for that extra money.

Kinja'd!!!

Cool little SS emblem on the steering wheel, I think the interior on the gen5 is nice and I like the dual gauge cluster compared with what it appears the new one will have.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The tires are nice too, but only 275 in the rear. The z/28 has 305s on 19 inch wheels all the way around. Can they be swapped or is there a clearance issue on the SS?

Kinja'd!!!

And what is the deal with those Brembo caliper weights? Here, have a closer look.

Kinja'd!!!

These are a new thing to me, and seem to be a source of contention on the camaro forums (mostly due to clearing smaller wheels). It seems they are there for noise reduction? I can’t figure out if there is a good replacement out there or what. Are the ZL1 brakes like that?

Kinja'd!!!

Bonus: How much is that puppy in the window? HNNNG!

Surprise! Performance brakes are noisy as hell.

Camaro you say?! My vote is the 1LE. Having had seat time in a regular SS, Mustang equivalent and the 1LE, I was extremely surprised by the improvements and alternate character of the 1LE. Feels more agile, nimble and some nice styling upgrades as well.

If you have the $$, go for a 1LE w/ some Z28 bits!

“Only” 275 in the rear. Also, white z/28 is the best z/28.

I’d wait just a few months until the 2016s hit the lot. Dealers are going to offer heavy discounts and incentives, I’m sure.

The answer to your question is here .

Also, 1LE or GTFO.

This. This. This.

Like with the 911... The “S” is the everyday performer and the “Turbo S” is the really crazy one, but the one to buy is the “GTS,” right in the middle.

The 1LE is the way to go. It is really surprising how different it feels even in normal driving than the “normal” SS.

BONUS: It will make the owners of that new Fusion Coupe everyone’s talking about bite their lip.

Wow, so the roller-skate look is the fixed version. Great link, thanks for that.

At first glance I thought it was the 2016 Camaro. :o

Yep, there is already a $1k cash back deal on the 2015 SS for my area.

I didn’t mean to be snarky — 275 is a plenty healthy tire.

And yeah, that white z/28 is a beauty.

IIRC, the weights are to dampen vibrations in the Brembos. In the early ‘10 models released in ‘09, rather than bespoke weights, they were stick-on wheel weights. Obviously heat doesn’t like adhesive, so that disappeared fast.

Oh... Yes... I had not really looked at the 1LE package details. This seems to have everything I want!

I would honestly say opt out of the 2ss package and get the 1le instead, the 1le is around 3k whereas the 2ss adds around 4k. You get a better all round car, and it will surprise you when you push it around the track/twisties. I’m in the process of checking one out, spent most of the day at the dealer Saturday working out numbers. I might just wait for the gen6 tho, that interior is just so damn fine. And LT1? 200lbs lighter? Magnetic Suspension? Yes please :)

Indeed — the 1LE has basically everything I want. But I really do want the HUD also, I think I need to get the 2SS trim to get it? Man, they always get me with the cool options.

Yup!

You technically miss out on the mega LSA, and if you can afford ZL-1 go for it, but I test drove the 1LE a few times and I can’t imagine ever needing more power than a good ol’ LS3.

I’d get in plenty trouble with the V6, so horsepower is not really the issue for me, haha!

Now that I say that, a V6 1LE would be an interesting option... hmmm

1LE gets 285s all around ;) and yes, people have fit 305s on them as well.

However, good luck finding a new or even lightly used 1LE on a lot, as I believe 2015 orders have already stopped.

It comes with the 2ss, correct. Or was it the RS? I forget. The RS is all tech, like the halo lights, etc. It’s one or the other, but I personally would rather spend the 2ss money on Recaros and 1le, which add up still to less than one with just 2ss. I’ll be test driving one in two days with 1ss, NPP, RS and Recaros stickered at 41k

I am a bit confused with the options. It does look like the 2ss is required for the HUD. And yeah, RS is not really one that I need, the 1LE has way nicer wheels so all you’d get if you had both is the headlights and taillights I guess..

There you go. See I personally would rather spend on the HID lamps and LED tails, than getting the HUD or any of the other items in the 2SS as I usually replace sound systems anyway. Those 1LE wheels are so nice....
